UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND EVALUATION OF MITEY – 2022
‘Mitey has the potential to radically change the landscape of mental health education in Aotearoa’
Mitey’s collective of partners brings together people and entities who are passionate about our most vulnerable, our children. They saw the need and they responded.
One in five Kiwi kids will experience mental health issues before they turn 18. Embedding mental health education into our schools will be key to turning our mental health statistics around.
Mitey’s results are evident – ‘Mitey makes talking about mental health normal. It has opened conversations for our students and we know that they’re starting to think about the mental health of others.’ School Principal
Join us to be part of the solution. We owe it to our children to equip them with everything they need to deal with the challenges life will throw at them.
Changing the way we educate about mental health
Reaching over 190 schools across NZ
Touching the lives of over 60,000 students aged 5-13
Openly talking about our mental health
Building stronger communities who focus on wellbeing
CHANGING THE CONVERSATION AROUND MENTAL HEALTH
We believe learning about mental health is as important as learning to read and write
We believe positive mental health is not extracurricular and can be taught within the NZ Curriculum
We want to remove the stigma
surrounding mental health
We want children to recognise key signs and feel comfortable seeking support if they need it

Our Impact
The 2022 evaluation of Mitey concluded that ‘Mitey is a cutting edge unique approach… and has initiated meaningful and significant change towards effective mental health education in schools’.
Find out more about the evaluation here.
Mitey schools report changes in students’ behaviour:
‘Boys talking openly about feelings of hurt, they use to say “he did it” now we hear “I am crying because…” I did that because you hurt my heart”, the boys are really owning their feelings and actions.’
‘I had a student tell me he is now brave enough to talk to his parents about wanting to see a counsellor. Before Mitey he wasn’t feeling brave enough to let his parents know how he was really feeling but Mitey has given him the strategies to know that it’s ok to talk about your feelings and emotions and what’s bothering you.’
